Impact of Integrated Wind Farm Control on Frequency Support Services

Increasing wind penetration demands active frequency support from wind farms. This work integrates Wind Power Plant Control (WPPC) with Wind Farm Flow Control (WFFC) in a dynamic MATLAB/Simulink + FLORIS framework.

New functionalities include:

(1)Optimised wake-steering via geometrical linear relation to derive yaw setpoints;

(2)Fast Frequency Reserve (FFR) and Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) controllers tuned to Nordic SA requirements.

A farm of four 15 MW IEA RWT turbines, aligned at 5D spacing, was simulated across various wind regimes, gusts, and yaw settings.

Results: +3.11% farm power with optimised yaw; FFR and FCR met activation timing; performance limits observed near cut-in speeds. Integrated WPPC+WFFC increased reserves and improved reliability of frequency services.
